HOW TO DEVELOP THE TASTE OF TEA- A BEGINNER’S GUIDE
Being able to evaluate what you’re about to taste is a skill itself. Some people in the world are born to be taste testers while some of us have to put in some work for our taste buds.
Even if you’ve never had tea before, we can always rely on our senses right? This is the kind of method that I usually use when reviewing any kind of tea.
STEP 1- OBSERVE THE TEA LEAVES
Try to smell an aroma from the leaves. I they smell pleasant brew them and then sieve the water. Add back your leaves and give it a few gentle shakes. The heat helps to release the aromatic compounds in the tea.
STEP 2 – OBSERVE THE LIQUOR
After you brew and pour it, observe closely. What does the brewed tea look like? Is it clear in appearance? What is the color? Are there any aromas apparent? Is there something new you notice? Try an aroma cup if you have trouble smelling.
STEP 3 - TASTE TIME
Finally, you get to taste the tea! It might sound weird but don’t forget to slurp it. Slurping makes tasting more effective by getting the tea to every corner of your mouth. Churn the tea around in your mouth as well.
Now to observe, first how does the mouth feel? What was the consistency of the tea? Was it thin or thick?
The taste of tea can be very complex. Some aromas will hit hard while others might linger in to finish. Hope this helps you find you your perfect tea blend!
